Mission Beach is one of the better known beaches in San Diego, perhaps because of Belmont Park and its centerpiece, The Giant Dipper roller coaster, originally built in the 1920's. The combination of great beaches and waves for the surfer or swimmer, volleyball courts and the boardwalk that stretches for miles, makes Mission Beach a very popular beach for visitors and residents.

Step off of the main road through town, Mission Boulevard, and you'll find quaint neighborhoods of small homes and condos. No large condo communities are to be found in Mission Beach. Most of Mission Beach condos are 2 -- 10 units. As prices for both homes and rentals increased, some homeowners converted their homes to condos. The top floor units have balconies and stretch out over the garage, and the bottom floor units have generous patios that become and extension of the home. Homes used as vacation rentals are quite popular in Mission Beach, but there are many long time residents in the community as well.

Renovation and re-building is in full swing in the community. Some condos and homes are being torn down and rebuilt, though a height limit protects the integrity of the community. Other condos or homes are being renovated or expanded. Parking is extremely tight in the community, except for in the Belmont Park area where there are large parking areas that still fill up quickly on the weekend. Some homes have garages, while others have assigned parking spaces.
